We
clambered ashore
from primordial depths,
Seeking the light
that calls to our bones;
Mired,
by violence and passion
we leap neck and neck,
All tooth, nail
and thick skin;
We try,
We try so hard,
But grace is elusive;
We have not yet come so far
- in a race we may yet lose;
I dream,
I am a bird,
Soaring over mountains,
and moonbeams and into a future
where they may matter;
These furtive prayers,
offered up to heaven,
And the endless stream of tears,
shed for my species.
