This morning I was greeted by Twitter's brand spanking new layout. That's when I happened to notice that I'd posted my 13,000th tweet two days ago. It had me feeling a bit nostalgic so I tried thinking back but no big shocker, I can't remember what my very first tweet was. It's probably better that way, knowing myself I can guess it was something stupidly awkward, the kind of tweet that should never be allowed to see the light of day again.

Tribute, an omnibus consisting of five (5) short stories and ten (10) flash fiction pieces spanning the urban fantasy, horror and literary fiction genres is now available as a $2.99 Amazon Kindle ebook. The Tribute omnibus swings the pendulum from literary urban fantasy to violent, scary horror. Just for kicks, there's the teeniest bit of metaphysical cosmology thrown into the mix.

These days, I have the attention span of a mite. Well, maybe it's not quite as bad as that. It's a good thing I work in a field that requires constant multitasking and switching mental gears. Sticking to a dedicated task like writing a full-length short story or novel, not to mention editing either of the two is more than a bit challenging these days. It makes for very short stories and excruciatingly slow progress on anything exceeding flash fiction.

I am black and I write sci-fi, but I couldn't exactly be a poster girl for Black Sci-Fi. Mind you, I do believe the Black Sci-Fi trend is a noble endeavor. This is not a question of the genre's validity. These are my thoughts as to whether or not I, as a sci-fi writer who happens to be a 'person of color' has any place therein. Admiring these talented individuals doesn't mean I get to identify with them. This is a lesson I learned a long time ago.

Sex and scandal sell really well. They'll probably continue to sell better than books without plots hinged on sleaze as long as people need a bit of mental escape from their humdrum daily lives. If one were to judge by what makes it out of Hollywood, we are systematically degenerating into a culture defined by cheap thrills, stupidity and unless my protagonist happens to be a scantily clad nymphomaniac with the IQ of a dodo, what I put to paper would never see the light of day. Thankfully, we're not quite there yet.
